The history of the current building’s location begins in the XVth and XVIth centuries, when the emerging middle-class raised here its mansions and shops. The next properties built on the site belonged to famous and influential families such as the Doicescu boyar and Lazar Kalinderu, the administrator of the Coltea Inn.

In the XXth century, the Rural Land Bank commissioned the architect Paul Smarandescu to design a new and classy building that would serve as institution’s headquarters. The present building was constructed between 1924 and 1926, in neoclassical style with baroque accents.

Paul Smarandescu is one of the most important Romanian architects and is famous for his Neo-Romanian style buildings designed for public and private institutions.
